Humayun Ahmed: The Mystery Man Bangla literature has been adorned with several talented writers from time to time. Yet, Humayun Ahmed's name stands among the leading stars in the galaxy of Bangla literature. He was born to Fayzur Rahman and Ayesha Khatun on 13th November 1948 in Kutubpur village of Netrokona district of Bangladesh. Like his entire life, his early childhood has also been mysterious as he depicted in his autobiographical book "Amar Chelebela".His mother had been diagnosed with typhoid twice immediately after his birth which led to Humayun spending most of his early childhood with his maternal grandmother. And as he states his mother's cure from that situation was nothing less than a miracle. His father was a sub-inspector of Police and he loved enigma. He was killed at the hands of the Pakistani Military in 1971 for helping the freedom fighters with ammunition. His family faced an extreme financial crisis after that. Post our liberation war Humayun graduated in Chemistry from the University of Dhaka. He had also achieved his master's degree from the same university and joined the varsity as a lecturer. His results in his matriculation (now SSC) and intermediate (now HSC) exams were also outstanding. He later earned his Ph.D. in "Polymer Chemistry" from North Dakota State University. His first book "Nondito Noroke" was published in 1972 and that's how history began. His books gained extreme popularity in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Some of his most famous works include"Jochona o Jononir Golpo", "krishnopokkho" "Aguner Poroshmoni" "Shonkhonil Karagar" and many more." Himu" was one of his most special characters as many readers liked to think that the writer himself had many similarities with Himu. His mysterious lifestyle and decisions also made Humayun different from others. At the peak of his success as an author Humayun started directing TV serials and single episode dramas." Kothao Keu nai" and "Ayomoy" are some of his notable TV works." Baker Bhai" created a sensation at that time. He later went on to direct films based on his own stories and won 6 national awards in total for films like "Daruchini Dip" and "Shyamal Chaya" amongst the others. Shuvro and Mishir Ali are also two of his famous characters. He married Gultekin Khan in 1976 and had four children with her. Later on, they got divorced and he married his colleague and his second wife Meher Afroz Shaon who was only 23 at that time. Humayun was 56 then. This event led to many controversies but Humayun was with Sharon till his last breath. His books created hype for rains and full moons among the Bangla readers. His last published book was "Deyal" that itself was controversial and had much sensitive information. He was critically acclaimed as well as criticized for his writing. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Puroshkar, Ekushey Podok, Adomji Shahittya Purushkar, and many more. Humayun breathed his last on 19th July 2012 in New York, USA. He had been suffering from Colon Cancer and was admitted to the Bellevue Hospital, New York. His death shook the nation and has created a permanent vacancy in the world of literature. His writing style was like no other and this vacancy will never be fulfilled. And as legends never die Humayun is still alive in our hearts with his works.
